Folinic-Plus - Vitamins B6, B9 & B12

About B Vitamins

B vitamins are important to maintain optimal health and keep you energized. Each B vitamin is unique, but they have closely interrelated functions. Folinic-Plus contains vitamins B6, B9, & B12.

WHAT ARE B VITAMINS?

B vitamins are important to maintain optimal health and keep you energized. They help with energy production, heart health, cognitive function and even mood! There are 8 essential B vitamins, and each one helps the process your body uses to get or make energy from the food you eat.  Each B vitamin is unique, but they have closely interrelated functions.

B vitamins are naturally found in a variety of foods, but certain health conditions and medications can decrease the body’s ability to absorb or utilize B vitamins which can lead to a deficiency. The need for B vitamins can also be increased by stress, an unhealthy diet, illness, smoking and the use of alcohol and drugs. Since B vitamins are excreted from the body every day (water-soluble), most must be replenished on a regular basis.

VITAMIN B6

Vitamin B6 is widely known for its role with protein metabolism and biosynthesis of neurotransmitters.  B6 helps the body turn food into energy, helps the body fight infections and helps babies’ brains develop normally when taken by pregnant women. Vitamin B6 is found in a variety of foods including fish, beef liver, potatoes, starchy vegetables, fruit and fortified cereals.

Vitamin B6 deficiency can be associated with the following symptoms:

  • Microcytic anemia
  • Dermatitis with cheilosis (scaling on the lips and cracks at the corner of the mouth)
  • Glossitis (swollen tongue)
  • Epileptiform convulsions
  • Depression
  • Confusion
  • Weakened immune function

Vitamin B6 deficiency can be associated with certain conditions:

  • Celiac disease
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Ulcerative colitis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Liver disease
  • End-stage renal disease
  • Chronic renal insufficiency

Some medications may put patients at risk for Vitamin B6 deficiency.

  • Oral contraceptive use has been associated with B6 deficiency. There is some speculation that the biochemical effects may play a role in mood disorders, such as depression, via the tryptophan catabolic pathway.

One tablet of Folinic-Plus®contains 50 mg of Pyridoxal 5’-phosphate which is an active form of B6.

VITAMIN B9

Vitamin B9 refers to a group of related compounds called folates which can be precursors to or participate in a related series of metabolic steps. Vitamin B9 helps maintain a healthy nervous system, helps the growth of red blood cells, helps support adrenal function and reduces the risk of birth defects when taken by pregnant women. Foods high in folate include soybeans, lentils, asparagus, spinach, broccoli and avocados.

Vitamin B9/Folate deficiency can be associated with the following symptoms:

  • Depression
  • Birth defects
  • Low birth weight
  • Pregnancy loss
  • Memory loss
  • Cervical dysplasia

Some medications may put patients at risk for B9/folate deficiency:

  • Epileptic drugs such as phenytoin (Dilantin®), carbamazepine (Carbatrol®, Tegretol®, Equetro®, Epitol®), and valproate (Depacon®) could reduce blood levels of folate. Taking folic acid supplements could also reduce blood levels of these medications.

One tablet of Folinic-Plus®contains4mg of folinic acid (leucovorin, 5-formyltetrahydrofolate) which is a reduced form of folate.

VITAMIN B12

Vitamin B12 helps the growth of red blood cells and helps support the metabolism of the nervous system.  Vitamin B12 is naturally found in animal products, including fish, meat, eggs and milk products.  One in six individuals over the age of 65 years is believed to be at risk for vitamin B12 deficiency. 1 Vitamin B12 is generally not present in plant foods which is why vegetarians and vegans can become B12 deficient.

Some medications may put patients at risk for Vitamin B12 deficiency:

  • Metformin, the #1 type II diabetes medication, can cause B12 deficiency. Studies and case reports suggest that 10% – 30% of patients who take metformin have reduced vitamin B12 blood levels. Severity worsens with length of use.
  • Proton pump inhibitors also interfere with dietary B12 absorption.

Vitamin B12 deficiency can also be associated with certain conditions:

  • Vegetarian diet
  • Vegan diet
  • Celiac disease
  • Crohn’s disease

One tablet of Folinic-Plus®contains 2mg as Methylcobalamin which is an active form of B12 that does not contain a cyanide group.
