B vitamins are important to maintain optimal health and keep you energized. They help with energy production, heart health, cognitive function and even mood! There are 8 essential B vitamins, and each one helps the process your body uses to get or make energy from the food you eat. Each B vitamin is unique, but they have closely interrelated functions.
B vitamins are naturally found in a variety of foods, but certain health conditions and medications can decrease the body’s ability to absorb or utilize B vitamins which can lead to a deficiency. The need for B vitamins can also be increased by stress, an unhealthy diet, illness, smoking and the use of alcohol and drugs. Since B vitamins are excreted from the body every day (water-soluble), most must be replenished on a regular basis.
Vitamin B6 is widely known for its role with protein metabolism and biosynthesis of neurotransmitters. B6 helps the body turn food into energy, helps the body fight infections and helps babies’ brains develop normally when taken by pregnant women. Vitamin B6 is found in a variety of foods including fish, beef liver, potatoes, starchy vegetables, fruit and fortified cereals.
