B vitamins are essential for the body to utilize energy and all organ systems are dependent on them. B vitamins are naturally found in a variety of foods, but certain health conditions and medications can decrease the body’s ability to absorb or utilize them which can lead to a deficiency. Since B vitamins are water-soluble (excreted from the body daily), most must be replenished on a regular basis.
- • B6 - 50mg as Pyridoxal 5’-phosphate – an active form of B6
- • B9 - 4mg as folinic acid (leucovorin, 5-formyltetrahydrofolate) – a reduced form of folate
- • B12 - 2mg as Methylcobalamin – an active form of B12 which does not contain a cyanide group
- Your medications are causing a vitamin B deficiency
- You are not getting the recommended vitamin intake through your diet
- Some medications that are critical for a condition may interfere with your body’s absorption or utilization of B vitamins.
MANY MEDICATIONS MAY PUT PATIENTS AT RISK FOR VITAMIN DEFICIENCY
-
Oral contraceptive use has been associated with B6 deficiency. There is some speculation that the biochemical effects may play a role in mood disorders, such as depression, via the tryptophan catabolic pathway.
-
Epileptic drugs such as phenytoin (Dilantin®), carbamazepine (Carbatrol®, Tegretol®, Equetro®, Epitol®), and valproate (Depacon®) could reduce blood levels of folate. Taking folic acid supplements could also reduce blood levels of these medications.
-
Metformin, the #1 type II diabetes medication, can cause B12 deficiency. Studies and case reports suggest that 10%–30% of patients who take metformin have reduced vitamin B12 blood levels. Severity worsens with length of use. Proton pump inhibitors may interfere with dietary B12 absorption.
